X4247 15.3.23. Tests to attempt to determine transmission loss on direct and indirect gears due to oil churning and gear inefficiency. The tests were carried out on the beds with a Froude Water Brake. Test 1. Box filled up to the standard level with Price's Amber 'B'. Engine run a short time to warm up oil before commencing test. Horse power at any r.p.m. taken first on direct drive and then on the other two gears. B.2.R. 762 m.m. Engine r.p.m. | Top. (Dyna. r.p.m., H.P.) | Second. (Dyna. r.p.m., H.P.) | Bottom. Starting temp. 34°C. Finishing temp. 64°C Test II Box emptied of oil and run for three speeds without oil. Then oil circulated in the box and again emptied out before the next speed test. It was found that unless this was done there was a loss of power owing to the gearbox drying up. Engine r.p.m. | HP. Direct drive. | HP. Second gear. | H.P.
