To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} X1020 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}19/KW.29.1.36. Phantom III. We herewith attach a sketch (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}64) of suggested alternative methods of adapting Hall's solid bearings to the Marine type of connecting rod. Scheme A.{Mr Adams} shows the complete bearing cradle in Hall's metal, the cap half being modified to take steel strap caps, is otherwise as LeC.4196. In scheme B. the existing steel cradle is modified to adapt a Hall's solid metal forked rod bearing, .087" thick. This is a flanged bearing with shims for location. The blade rod bearing is housed on the blade rod in a similar manner, thus running on the steel cradle of the forked rod which should have a hardened surface as is the case with the crankshaft. We shouldlike a design for the adaption of Hall's metal to the Marine type of rod as quickly as possible. This type of rod is of a more sturdy construction than that of the strap type. At the present time, tests are being carried out on Hall's solid shells in the strap type of rod. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/L.H.Swindall. | ||
