We have stripped off the bottom tank to examine water ways and soldering and while the former are quite satisfactory, the latter is not.

If you examine the pieces returned you will see that the joint between the bottom tank and matrix along the front face of the matrix has not been at all good - in fact, it is surprising that leakage has not occurred there. The rear face joint is satisfactory, and we do not see why both these joints should not be 100% as they are dip soldered. The ends of the tank have not been soldered to the side plates as soundly as they could have been and the bonding up of the waterways between the side plates and matrix sides is not good.

Will you please let the writer have your remarks on these criticisms, as these are the sort of defects which we are continually up against in your work and which might lead to production trouble as in the case of oil coolers. If necessary we must get down to the question of making thorough metallic contact between the matrix and the bottom tank, before the dipping process - we discussed this previously, you will recollect, on Phantom III matrices.

We are still waiting for you to confirm in writing the arrangement about flow testing one in twenty of our Wraith matrix units as requested in our letter of 6th. inst. - will you please address your reply on this subject to our Order Office.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
