RE. ERNEST HUTTONS' 20 HP. CAR. X1588 /53

The float in the carburetter on the 20 HP. is made of brass, not copper. The 40/50 HP. has a copper float. Special care has been taken on the 20 HP. in order to make use of metals which are non-corrodible. For instance, the petrol filters have been changed from copper gauze to monel metal gauze.

We do not know of any parts on the 20 HP. which should be liable to corrode by the use of benzol. On the 40/50 we are now nickel-plating the copper floats in order to prevent corrosion.

Pure benzol does not attack copper; it is the impurities which cause the trouble. These impurities have been found in petrol as well as benzol. Some of the worst cases we have had of corroded floats and copper parts have been in the U.S. where very little benzol is used.

With regard to Duckhams New Process Oil. We have been carrying out tests with this and agree that it is a good oil. We have not been able to confirm that there is any less conbonization with this oil than with any good oil of similar viscosity. The chief virtue we have found in it is that it is very fluid at low temperatures and there-by reduces the starting torque required.
