Dear Mr. Sidgreaves:

Report on Chassis Alteration No.3
Radiator Chrome Plating.

Many thanks for your note of March 28th on this subject.

I should like briefly to cover the points raised:-

(1) COST. In the original note I stated that the loose-shell radiator cost more than the unit radiator. By increasing the efficiency of production and taking advantage of the fact that the "shell" is to be made for appearance only and the "core" for strength only, we are now able to reduce the cost to 20% less than unit construction.

(2) Appearance. There is no appreciable difference in appearance between the loose-shell and the unit construction except that the sleeve on the shell which surrounds the filler spout is about 1/4" greater in diameter than in the unit radiator.

(3) Weight. Following weights for radiator only without filler cap or shutter have been obtained:-

Unit radiator (21-1/4" matrix height) - 86 lbs.
Loose shell radiator (21-1/4" matrix height) 89-1/4 lbs.
Loose shell radiator with 4-1/4" tubes for automatic shutter (without shutter or thermostat) ---------------- 77-1/2 lbs.

The reason for the small increase of weight with loose-shell construction is that the large masses of solder which have been considered necessary to make a water tight and strong joint without rivets and with a sharp corner on the outside, are no longer necessary.
