We have now received from the India Office a letter dated 22nd August enclosing a schedule of the proposed trials of armoured car chassis. It appears that it may be desirable for us to make two tests, one merely to pass the test so that they cannot refuse to take delivery of the vehicles; another to show the highest speeds, etc. of which the cars are capable, namely, a demonstration to "show off". With regard to the first test, it will be noted that Clause 1 does not state how long we may halt, so that we could insist on a long halt to enable the engine to cool. Also this clause calls for no particular speed performance. We can go as slowly as we like, to keep the water cool. Clause 2. We can again insist on a long halt as in clause 1. Clause 3. We can go as slowly as we like, to keep the water cool. Clause 4. We can go as slowly as we like, to keep the water cool, and we can insist on a long wait to cool the engine. As regards the long valley test Clause 1, we can insist on starting with the engine dead cold, and I presume we should go very slowly to keep the water cool. The minimum speed is specified as under four miles an hour. Clause 2. I presume we would go very slowly to keep the water cool. The clause does not specify the size of the figure of eight, so that we can make it as large as we like. The above points are mentioned merely to cover ourselves against any quibble as to whether we have passed the test legally, and we could explain to them that we intend to do the test at a higher speed, etc. later, after we have definitely passed the test they have laid down.
