-2- While going over this job and also observing the dismantling of the rocker cover, the uselessness of the costly spherical joint on the sliding piece was obvious. No-one attempts to undo this joint, the pipe is pulled straight out of the air silencer and we see no reason why it should not; therefore in our opinion this piece of costly manufacture should be dispensed with. Marles Steering. The steering on GUL-19 has got 1 1/2" free movement at the periphery of the steering wheel. There is no pre-loading. This is not a complaint, but in our opinion is going to become a costly one. I am enclosing a sketch and report, which Dixon makes clear the faults which should receive attention. Exhaust Suspension - 20/25 & 25/30. This is a complaint of rattles. The tail pipe suspension is the chief offender. This knocks and rattles, the trouble being the spring is too weak and too small a clearance between the sliding barrel and cap of the fixing on to the pipe. The sketch enclosed shows the trouble and what should be done to cure it. Ignition Wires. Shorting after a short time in service. I am sending you a set of wires taken out of a customer's car this week. I investigated the trouble before the wires were removed. This has been taken up with the Works previously but finally nothing done. The complaint is sufficient to receive attention, 15 cases during the last quarter at Cricklewood. The trouble is due to 3 causes - (1) Poor, and small dia. of rubber insulation. (2) Metal tube enamelled only. (3) Too sharp and too small pin openings for the wires. A series of very fine pin holes develop in the insulation which allow the H.T. current to short inside the tube. The cost is not great to renew these wires, being 7/- per set, but it is annoying to a customer to have two or three cylinders missing. Several cars have been in two and three times for the same trouble. 22-G-V suffered from the same cause. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/G.W.Hancock. | ||
