COPY. Cricklewood. July 1st, 1936. We have been investigating the reason why the O.S. foot brake seized on GUL-19, 25/30 HP. while the owner was abroad. Our examination proves that the hand brake was the primary cause. The liners on this shoe are burnt out, the springs have collapsed, the rivets show excessive heat. The foot brake liners do not shown very much deterioration and there was not the indication of excessive heat as shewn on the foot brake shoes. We attribute the cause to insufficient clearance of the hand brake shoes. These heated up, making the drum very hot, which was taken up by the foot brake, which in its turn then expanded and seized. The drum shows this. From the condition the seizure had been excessive. We have examined the clearance of the hand brake shows on another 25/30 - GUL-42. The measurement taken on the brake rope lever on axle was 5/8". We are of the opinion that this setting is too close and that it should not be under 3/4". The hand brake lever should pull up to the first notch without any strain, as it is, a fair amount of load is required to do so. The other two faults on GUL-19 are :- (1) Oil Filler. The trouble with the filler cap is first, rivetting the pressing on to the casting. The joint is not oil tight and the splash during running drains out through the gaps between the rivet. Secondly, the same pressing which forms the face for the leather washer was not even and a good joint could not be made. We enclose a sketch showing the faults. This job will have to receive attention. Another complaint of this filler cap is that it becomes so hot that it is removed with difficulty. Why cannot we have the Bentley cap. (2) Air Intake Pipe from Silencer to Carburetter. Complaint - choke stiff. We enclose a sketch of this connection. The bolt A can be tightened up, and so distort the barrel for the choke valve and spindle that it will not work correctly. A distance tube or shouldered bolt should be used. | ||
