With reference to the question of producing a cheaper axle tube for the above we have looked into the one shewn on GL.{G. Linnett} 506., but R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not approve of the increase in diameter if it can be avoided.

On N. scheme 3336. herewith we make a suggestion for a tube, the manufacture of which is intended to be on the lines indicated in EY2/G24831., that is to say, a piece of tube is taken, 3" outside diameter, and of an inside diameter requiring no machining in the parallel portion. There is sufficient material to make the large diameter of the taper, and the outer end can be swaged down.

Would you please look at this tube and say whether you agree that it can be made along the lines you indicate.

The changes in section have been reduced to a minimum and made as smooth as possible.
