| GRY{Shadwell Grylls} x51 To HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Copy to HHO. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} EA. E/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/MN.4.6.35. SECRET. RE BENTLEY PETROL TANK. The outside filler on the side of the body to LeC 4356 and as fitted to the coachwork of the experimental Bentley in London, was considered too heavy and in appearance not too elegant. On LeC 4520 herewith, is a revised design of this filler in which a casting on the tank has been deleted and a thin brass bellows has been inserted in the filler pipe to provide a degree of extensibility. The filler cap has been remodelled to create a smooth and rounded external appearance. On this scheme also we show a lightened petrol tank using for each part the gauge of material which was used by the Experimental Dept. in building up the lightened tank for the 3 B 1V. We have modified the shape of the end plates so that a machine may be employed for turning over the ends of the tank. We understand from the Tool Dept. that the present small recess makes it impossible to use a machine for this purpose. We have yet to send you particulars of the lightened suspension and a modification for the attachment of the petrol suction pipe. In order that we may have a chance of judging the appearance of this revised filler cap we wish to fit it to the coachwork experimental car in London, and LeC 4521 herewith shows it adapted to suit the diameter of filler pipe of the original scheme LeC 4356, which was fitted to that car. We would be glad if you could arrange to put this design LeC 4521 in hand immediately and send into the Office for our inspection the filler cap and fittings prior to chromium plating so that we may have an opportunity of making any modifications that may be desirable to the shape by filing before the piece is finished off finally.
