To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} (X5350) Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}4/E18.12.29. Re. HYPOID REAR AXLE 20 HP. X.2066 X.5350 I am in receipt of Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/MJ.16.12.29 and have taken careful note of the tests to which it is proposed to subject the hypoid rear axle. My view is that the best way will be to be guided by the results of the tests which you are proposing to carry out. I should like you, therefore, to keep me in close touch with these tests as they progress and then, if the parts come through successfully without serious trouble, we can probably avoid the necessity of the 10,000 mile road test. I note that hypoid axles are on two experimental 20 HP. cars, and as it will presumably be some time before the tests referred to are completed, I assume that one or other of the cars in question will be putting up substantial mileage in the interval which should give us useful information regarding the behaviour of the parts under normal use. In saying all the above I am assuming that the technical officials agree with the proposed action and I should be glad if Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} would make sure that such is the case.
