Dear Mr. Hines,

Many thanks for your report and your comments on the mileages at which the second tread in the double tread is beginning to show. As these second treads do not as a rule come through under 5,000 to 6,000 miles in our tyres, I have gone into the question of why those on your tyres should have appeared so early, with our Development Superintendent and his answer is that he purposely built on a light retread to the old casings as our standard heavy double tread built onto a new casing he considered would be expecting too much from a casing which had already given the same mileage as the average tyre.

I am sorry I was not aware of this when I originally sent the tyres, otherwise I should have made it clear, but personally, on a car like the Rolls-Royce I have not the slightest doubt that the casings would have survived a second full size double retread. However, as I understand from our Development Superintendent that he is about to despatch the larger size double tread Rapson's which you require for trials on your 40-50 H.P. you will experience in this instance the true result of our double tread fitted to a new casing.

In connection with the trials which you
