I do not think this suggestion would be a success. For the springs to be effective they would require to be rather strong, and would load the surface tending to produce the wear that they are intended to compensate for. The shaft would besupported in one plane by the springs alone, and if the springs were light it would be difficutl to prevent some chattering from going on.
