To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET DAL/M8. 7. 24. E.A.C.11. LUGGAGE GRID, PETROL TANK ETC. Handwritten notes: Top center: V8460 Top right box: X. 9460 V8460, X. 9400 V8400 We send herewith N.sch.1819, shewing the luggage grid and tank fender part of the petrol tank, and in general the rear end of the car. We have used the extended frame for EAC.2. which you have recently had, and it will be noticed that it is slightly modified. It is proposed to include the luggage grid in the cost of the chassis. As this we hope will provide an effective fender for the petrol tank we propose a little later on to see whether it can be adapted to EAC.3. and in connection with this we should like you to say when, and to what extent it would be convenient for us to modify the EAC. frames. For instance, it might be advisable to use the actual EAC.2. frame on EAC.3., including the rear axle, with 1" wider track. An alternative would be to take the present EAC.3. frame and extend the back end only. We are speaking of course of future e frames only, and we should like to give (you) us your views on this point. (Handwritten note: '(you)' is inserted) Regarding the petrol tank, the design of the one shewn is similar to that on your F.10644, except that we should like the Goshawk type cap and filler. We suggest that you might like to use this tank on EAC.3. instead of that shewn on F.10644. The only modification we anticipate to this tank will be the use of a reserve compartment, and in connection with this we should like you to suggest that the model which we believe HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has ready, should be sent down as soon as possible as we think the moment is favourable to get this approved. It is understood of course that the level indicator is to be like the Goshawk, subject to the necessary slight modifications in dimensions and dial. (Handwritten note: 'you' is inserted after 'like') We also shew a new position of the Hartford shock absorber giving more clearance for the body, and we should like this modification to be embodied in EAC.3. We have shewn a separate number plate which Sales recently asked us to do, to avoid painting the number on the tank, and we should like this also adapted for EAC.3. We think that a specimen of the luggage grid should be fitted to a chassis and shewn to Sales simultaneously with using experimental sets, so that we may get the criticisms of Sales as early as possible.
