Bentley Back Axle. We send herewith N.Sch.5099 showing modifications to prevent oil leaks from the pinion housing. We understand from the Experimental Department that the increased oil supply to the bearing as shown by N.Sch.4985 has brought up the oil leak referred to. The left-hand view of our scheme shows a thickened housing flange held up by .250 nuts. The studs are not shouldered but are recessed below the face of the casing. We show the use of the bearing with larger balls to EX.23493. No alteration is required to the axle casing. The right hand view shows a means to improve the oil tightness of the flange by relieving it of the .002" set up which is provided on the present flange. It appears to us that the set up may be the cause of the oil leak. However nothing should be done with this scheme unless it is not found possible to make the present arrangement satisfactory.
