207 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}7/R.7.4.37. BENTLEY REAR AXLE. TROUBLES. REMARKS. AXLE TUBE FLANGE LEAKS. 18 instead of 12 bolts instructed on production. Retrospective action impossible (a) Inadequate capacity of pinion Bearing with larger balls 18% bearing and greater capacity that fits in same space on 3 Exp. cars and (b) Noisy Axles. 3 Trials cars. Suggest standard- isation. Stiffer pinion on 1st in JY onwards should help. REAR WHEEL DRIVERS. (a) Knocks. (a) New design running on 6.B.IV and satisfactory on rig. (b) Failures. For retrospective action necessitates new hubs and skimming of brake drums. (b) Suggest S/ZNCR for immediate production regardless of scrap till (a) is standard- ised. LEAKS PASSED ACME THREAD. Suggest increasing radial clearance from .0035 to .006 as on P.III. This will prevent seizure destroying the thread. FAILURE OF THE CAGE IN PINION BEARING. Stiffer pinion may help also inc. capacity bearing. Exp. Dept. are trying N.Sch. 4985 improved lubrication. | ||
