RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from EFC. c. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJL. c. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X7653A EFC2/T18.5.28. STARTER ON CHASSIS 14-EX. We have now examined this starter and the evidence points to there being something definitely wrong with the gear wheel into which the motor pinion engages, e.g. it may be found to be a broken tooth. As evidence of this, the thump exists when the motor is turning the engine with all sparking plugs removed, and occurs definitely once per revolution. Please let me know at the earliest convenient moment what the actual fault is discovered to be, so that I may report to R.{Sir Henry Royce} who did not have a proper opportunity of investigating this matter himself, and is under the impression that it may be something to do with the end motion of the armature, which appears to be not the case.
