Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

For the attention of Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} West.

Dear Sirs,

We have heard from Mr. Minchin about his recent visit to Derby and the discussion as to whether the nine thick plates of the BGD9-SC type would be mechanically stronger than eleven thinner plates of the GLD11-SC type in similar size container.

We are anxious to try and get some data for you in connection with these two batteries and for this purpose we are proposing to apply a test under intensive conditions which would corrode the plate girds of the positives and thus produce stretching and consequent weakening of the plates. This could be done by cycles of discharge and charge with excess inputs all carried out at a temperature maintained at not less than 100° F.{Mr Friese} and careful observations made at suitable periods to ascertain the condition and increased dimensions of the positives. This would afford a conclusive indication of the relative strength of nine thick or eleven thin plates. We shall be glad to have any suggestions or comments you may have concerning the above proposal.

We are also arranging to make a composite battery for Mr. Minchin's new Bentley car with three cells having BGD9 sections and the other three cells with GLD11 sections which it is expected will furnish useful data in due course.

Yours faithfully,
H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Preston
PETO & RADFORD.
