-2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}10/KW.6.2.36. The gear we already have has now done about 5,000 miles on the road, and we are very pleased with it apart from the sponginess. We now intend to endurance test the gear on our bumping drums. We have made measurements of the sponginess of the gear by hanging weights on the pendulum lever and measuring the deflection of the ball pin. The 1.7/16" gear deflects 0.110" per 100 lbs. load while our standard Bentley steering deflects 0.060 per 100 lbs. We estimate that the proposed modifications would reduce the deflection of the 1.7/16" gear to 0.070 per 100 lbs. We have in our stores the third of the L.7 gears which you supplied to us, and which has never been used. We were wondering whether this would be of any value to you. If so, we could return it and you could credit us with a nominal sum. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
