GOSHAWK - RE FRONT CROSS MEMBER. X4537 We send herewith N.sch. 1288 showing the strengthened cross member flange. It is proposed to spread the bolt centres a little in all directions to increase the radius between the boss and the flange and to put up the gauge once more, namely to .160. In order to overcome the difficulty in dis-mounting this cross member it is also proposed that a thin sheet steel packing should be used, at each end of the cross member. We also send a further scheme, N.sch.1292 showing a drop forging. The proposal is that N.sch. 1288 should be bumped being the cheaper job, and only if it appears insuf-ficiently strong from this test should N.sch. 1292 be tried. You may like to put both experiments in hand simultaneously so as to eliminate possible delay. We should like the packing pieces as thin as will enable the cross member to be got in and out. The thickness shewn is probably too much but on account of the odd shape of frame at this point, we cannot be sure, and think it should be investigated experimentally.
