Gearbox - Phantom III.

Non-floating Gear Bushes.

It is suggested that the next 10,000 mile car should be fitted with bushes for the 3rd and 2nd speed gears pressed in instead of floating, in view of the provision of satisfactory lubrication by the scoop for the 3rd speed and the trough for the 2nd speed.

The object is to reduce the rocking of the gears which should reduce the tendency to work out of mesh and also, we think, reduce the wear on the end faces of the bushes.

We send herewith N.Sch.4823 which shows the slight modifications we propose to ensure thorough access of the oil to the surfaces. All holes and grooves can be deleted from the bushes and the gears, and instead a longitudinal groove end milled in the shaft for each gear with chamfers to allow the oil to have access to the thrust faces. There are no grooves in the thrust faces as we do not think that these faces are held flatly against one another, but rather that they are in contact only over a small part of the circumference at a time.

N.Sch.4823 herewith.
