X.4256 "KITE" REAR AXLE.

We send herewith a print of "N" Scheme 698 shewing the proposed adaptation of the Goshawk rear axle to the "Kite. In making this adaptation we have incorporated in the design as many of the recent modifications to this type of axle, which were made when we were doing Buzzard, as seemed possible.

We understood that Mr Royce hoped to be able to lighten the tubes on this axle, and so we have shewn them of reduced dimensions, and also reduced the tie rod to the next size.

The arrangement shewn on Fig 1 is that of the existing Goshawk, but in order to take full advantage of the 1 1/2" driving shafts, some time ago we made a modified arrangement with smaller bearings carrying the differential cage, and shew this on Fig 2. Our reason for shewing these two designs is that we are rather doubtful whether the small bearings on Fig 2 are quite right, as compared, for instance, with the "Northcliffe" they appear to be considerably overloaded.

With reference to the spring pad on Fig 1 we have shewn a peg either brazed or sweated to the axle tube, but we think that the brazing will spoil the heat-treatment of the tube, and we are doubtful whether it will be considered that sweating sufficiently reliable. Therefore at Fig 3 we have shewn the pad castellated to the axle.

Contd.
