Bonnet movement issues and the performance of Vaughan bonnet locks, suggesting an improved bar type lock.

With diamond engine mounting we are using a centrally mounted radiator to overcome bonnet movement, and we find it necessary to allow .025 lateral movement of the bonnet both against the radiator and the dash to prevent the side hinge from lifting at the opposite end to the restriction. This has been noticed on the bumper and on the road. A bad example being Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s car 56-GN, where the near side front end of the side hinge was lifting after the removal of the rear engine feet. This was due to - (a) No clearance between the bonnet and the dash on the near side. (b) The bonnet locks. Having overcome (a) the trouble still persisted. These Vaughan bonnet locks not only cause trouble in closing the bonnet, but also limit the lateral movement of the bonnet. Bonnet locks are now only fitted to cars when ordered and we suggest for such cars some improved design of bonnet lock such as the bar type lock L.S.2572 be adopted.
