X8390 ORIGINAL TO BM.) FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}) DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M1.6.27. Copy to [REDACTED] re. PHANTOM WING STAYS. X8390 We are sending to you by rail the wing stay templates supplied by both Barker's and Hooper's. While Barker's have sent actual templates, Hooper's have only supplied drawings. We regret that on examination we find the curvature required by the two firms varies so considerably that it is difficult for us to choose a shape which will approximate to that required by either. We have however come to the following definite conclusions:- (1) That the short wings alone should only be considered. The stays for short wings will come in easily for long ones. (2) A stay at section 'D' is impossible for us to supply on account of the wide variation between the long and short wing at the section. If they must have a stay at that section they can fit an extra one themselves. (3) Hooper wings are 5/8" higher than Barker. This should be neglected. With regard to the shape we can only offer the following suggestions, and leave the whole matter over for you to fix up between the coachbuilders, Sales, and yourselves, as we are unable to devote time to going to London to discuss the subject. (a) That there be two sets of wingstays, one to suit Barker's and one to suit Hooper's. We believe that the Barker shape would suit most people. (b) That all stays be sent out to Barker's shape, and Hooper's be asked to rebend them (hot) to their own shape. (c) That all the stays be sent out thus - having a shape 'Y' at the base which can be chosen to suit both people, and also our bonnet clip. The bending of the stay at the top to suit the crown of the wing to be done by the coachbuilders. (1) | ||
