TO EY. FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to - Copy to - HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL SECRET E2/M8.1.25. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. 'V+W' SERIES UNDERSHIELDS. X8290 We send herewith drawings Nos. LeC. 1974/5/6., dealing with the above. The first mentioned shews a general arrangement of the undershields and guards together with a perspective sketch illustrating the construction. You will see that the system consists of a fixed underpan in the front connected to a large fixed underpan under the clutch and gearbox by 2 detachable side guards. A detachable side guard is required strictly speaking on one side only of the chassis, to give access to the starter motor. Owing to the many limitations existing on this job we have found it impossible to arrange for the starter motor cover to be removed without removing side guard, but the latter piece has been made readily detachable, so we think this does not matter. The restriction occurs in the length of the pocket adjacent to the motor which cannot be made any more than shewn without preventing the side guard moving forward, an operation which is necessary for the purpose of drawing it downwards from between the starter motor and the exhaust pipe. We have shewn the main shield under the gearbox cut away at the rear and should be glad if you would make this similar to EAC. 3. Drawings LeC. 1975/6. give full scale particulars of the more difficult parts of the guards and undershields. We have in these three drawings given enough information for a set of guards to be made up in the experimental department, from which the final complete details can be prepared. Blue prints have been sent to Mr. Royce for his comments. It should be understood that the schemes as we have made them apply to a chassis fitted with a starter motor on the engine. Actually for series 'V' the near side guard can be made to a simpler form with no pocket for the starter motor and will usefully serve to provide access to the oil relief valves. The main shield will still require pocketing for the starter motor housing if the crankcases are provided with this feature. PII FORE SHADOWED E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
