- 2 - splined to the secondary shaft. When engaging direct drive, the operations are similar, but operating on the opposite clutches with the result that the third speed clutch is held dis-engaged, allowing the direct drive clutch to engage, transmitting the drive direct from the primary shaft to the secondary shaft via the Humfrey-Sandberg Clutch, in a similar manner to that described for the third speed. The following points require consideration when reviewing this scheme :- Standard gear shifter rod interlock cannot be used. There appear to be two alternatives :- (1) To rely on detent only. (2) To fit special interlock. The rear bearing of primary shaft has been reduced in size from a light type to an extra light type, and bearing housing requires to be faced back. The third speed gears have been moved aft in the box. To enable this to be done, the bolt heads are now on the opposite side of layshaft gear flange to that shown in the original drawing, and slotted nuts are used in place of castle nuts for bearing locating bolts on secondary shaft bearing. The bearing of free gear on secondary shaft has been reduced in length. These gears have also had to have the width of one half of the gear face reduced in length. A special gear shifter fork is required, also special secondary shaft and primary shafts. RRB/NCB. 6.2.31. | ||
