DESCRIPTION OF HUMFREY-SANDBERG CLUTCHES

FITTED TO ROLLS-ROYCE GEARBOX.

------------------

The object of this application is to give easy engagement of direct drive and third gear, also freewheeling when driving on these gears.

To accomplish this, we have substituted Humfrey-Sandberg Clutches for the dog clutch employed in the standard arrangement.

The method of operation is as follows :

Referring to drawing H.S.650L, with gear shift lever in neutral, the outer members A1 A2 of both Humfrey-Sandberg Clutches are prevented from contact with clutch rollers by control nut C, this position giving no drive on either gear.

Now moving gear shift rod D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} into third gear position, the cams E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} operating on the rollers F.{Mr Friese} will cause the arms attached to the control nut C. and the thread G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} to move downwards when looking at section on top left-hand side of drawing. The thread G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} being free to rotate on the shaft but not free to move end-wise will cause the nut C. to move towards the front of the gearbox or towards the left-hand side of the drawing, when looking at the section on the right-hand side.

Nut C. will carry with it the outer member A1, and allows outer member A2 to be pressed into contact with the clutch rollers by means of springs similar to H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} in third gear clutch, thereby allowing clutch to engage, the drive being transmitted from constant mesh gear to cage K, then to the rollers which are jambed between the outer member A2 and the inner member L1 this being
