High-speed steering wobbles in a Hispano Suiza vehicle.

BJ. c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EY. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HIGH SPEED STEERING WOBBLES 457 Hispano Suiza. We have made the Hispano high speed wobble. The car was in its standard condition with the exception of :- (a) Leaves taken out of front springs to make them 25% weaker. (b) One wheel 1 lb. out of balance. (c) Tyre pressures 35 lbs/sq.in. Normal pressure tyres. The springs happened to be in this condition when the car was tried first. We are restoring them to standard strength and repeating the test. From the driver's point of view, the wobbles on the Hispano are relatively not so unpleasant as those on the 'Phantom'. They do not extend over a range of speed exceeding 2 m.p.h. on advance, and 3 or 4 m.p.h. on retard. We believe some of the violence of the wobble may be taken up by the weak side steering tube springs. We are removing the wings so that we can see exactly what the axle is doing and so get a better comparison with the 'Phantom'. We are also going to try and get some balloon tyres for this car.
