Faults found with the hydraulic dampers, brakes, engine, crankcase breather, and exhaust system.

HYDRAULIC DAMPERS.

We have had to dismantle the dampers to attend to the poundage as the car was riding hard in the minimum position. We found that the fault was caused by the plunger of the dampers sticking and not returning to the minimum position. Apparently it is caused by the controlled end of the damper facing forward and water and sludge is being flung on to it the whole time. When taken down the ends were solid with sludge. The guide for the plunger pin was galled up preventing the free movement of the pin. Water had entered through the guide into the cavity behind the fabric. This has occurred on all the dampers.

BRAKES.

We dismantled the brake drums. The condition of the cast iron surface is very poor. It has a very rough looking surface, was rusty, water evidently enters freely. There were were no score marks or grooving. Oil was leaking from the bottom joint of the pivot pin on the near side front.

ENGINE.

The rocker cover joint has shrunk further making the joint unreliable. We could do with a fresh jointing. Oil entered the ignition contact compartment during the runs with the Potts' oil cooler. The reason being that the release oil was building up owing to its less viscosity with the low temperature. It also proves that we are delivering too much oil.

CRANKCASE BREATHER.

We were of the opinion that the breather to the crankcase was not pulling air out. We therefore fitted a water guage to the breather pipe and found that there was no depression taking place even when the breather pipe was taken out of the crankcase and that end of the pipe blocked up. We have not been successful in finding a place in the air silencer that will give us any depression. we are therefore going to try a different position on the carburetter.

EXHAUST.

The front silencer has cracked round the front outer edge, i.e. followed the welding. The top is being pushed in whilst the bottom is being pulled out(this is end cap).
