The testing of DES. 1613 cylinders on Goshawk and Kestrel engines.

DES. 1613 CYLINDERS. x2965. x3866 The above cylinders are at present specified for Goshawk engines but are shortly to be Type Tested on K.lll MS.607 under evaporatively cooled conditions, at Goshawk ll rating. Constructional differences to present standard are - (a) The mixture pipe is of the grouped variety, the manifolds being integral with the cylinder blocks. (b) The top water rail is cast in aluminium and bolted directly to the cylinder block which discharges water into the top rail through numerous outlets arranged throughout the length of the block. The object being to provide as free an outlet for the water as possible. CONDITIONS OF TEST. Tests were made with the cylinders fitted to two engines - Kestrel ll S.27 and Kestrel lll MS.607. Specifications of the engines were as follows :- (A). KESTREL 11 S.27. (1) Short throw crankshaft. (2) Articulated Conn. Rod Assembly. (3) Camshafts E.32801 - Std. 1932 S. Kestrel. (4) DES.1613 Cylinders embodying the grouped mixture pipe and 14 mm. Spark. Plugs. (5) Water pump to LOP.E.38201 - 4" dia. 8 vane rotor with inlet quick vanes carrying hotwell pump to LOP.E.37262. (6) Standard Kestrel Supercharger. (7) BTH. SC.12-7C. magnetos with cross overwiring scheme. (8) Lodge A.15 Sparking Plugs. (B). KESTREL lll MS. 607. (1) Short throw crankshaft. (2) Articulated Conn. Rod Assembly. (3) Camshafts E.40042 - harmonic decelerations. (4) DES.1613 cylinders. (5) Water pump to LOP.E.38201. (6) Standard MS. Kestrel Supercharger. (7) BTH. SC.12-7C. mags. with cross over wiring scheme. (8) Lodge A.15 Spark Plugs. | ||
