PERFORMANCE OF 20 HP. X5770

Recently you asked BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} for comparative H.P. and performance for different models of the 20 HP. compared with the Phantom and Silver Ghost. We do not know quite what use you wish to make of the figures, but our view of the position is as follows :-

The attached report which we sent to R.{Sir Henry Royce} some time ago gives our view of the 20 HP. The position has not changed. We did hope that when the new turbulent head engine was being designed, the size of it could conveniently be increased. R.{Sir Henry Royce} at that time however thought it inadvisable to increase the size of the engine - (probably he was influenced by Sales attitude at that time as regards the 20 HP. car).

We have however received designs and produced the new turbulent head 20 HP. engine which gives us an improvement in performance over the existing car. Therefore, we have got to make the best of that and get it standardised. Whether the increase in power is sufficient, remains to be proved.

At the present time everyone have their hands full with the 'SG{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}' so that we have not been able to give much attention to the 20 HP. We do expect however to have a car running in two or three weeks with the engine modified to overcome the faults on it.

However much we increase the performance of the contd :-
