Referring to Sft.{Mr Swift}5/BH.5.10.36 we have now completed our investigation into the costs of the modified oil flap valves to LeC.5313. There will be an increase in material cost of 5d per chassis, but this is offset by the saving in machining of roughly 1 1/2 hours. The nett result shows a saving per engine of something over 3/- (including charges). It appears, therefore, that the modification is worth putting through as soon as possible. Owing to the fact that the seats for the flap valves are not machined on the proposed new scheme, it is desirable and necessary to prove whether the LeC.5313 is efficient from an operational point of view, and we suggest therefore that you make up a model which can be examined and tested quickly. We do not think it necessary to put it through a 10,000 miles test, because the ability of the flap valves to restrict the flow of oil can be determined in a lower half crankcase detached from the engine. We are sending you a blueprint of LeC.5313. E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} Prints to Sft.{Mr Swift} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
