LUBRICATING OIL FOR HYPOID REAR AXLES:
---------------------------------

The position at present is that there is only one oil which can be successfully used in the S.S. Hypoid rear axles. viz: Whitmore's 'O' Compound.

This oil was recommended by the Gleason people when we first considered Hypoid axles; although we have asked them for recommendations for English oils, we have received none. The following oils have been tried unsuccessfully :-

Price's Amber 'A' Oil. Tried in one axle, the gears failed.

Wakefield's Castrol 'R'. Tried in three axles, one failed.

Wakefield's gear Compound. Tried in one axle, gears failed.

This latter oil was submitted to us by Wakefields' as an oil containing the properties existing in Whitmore's 'O' Compound, i.e. an English produced copy of the American oil.

At present therefore, only Whitmore's 'O' Compound must be used. We have pointed out to the Oil Co's that we cannot destroy our axles experimenting for them, and have suggested that they get the Gleason Co., to carry out their tests.
