EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}6/JH. 24th August, 1938. The English Steel Corporation, Vickers Works, Sheffield. For the attention of Mr. Gray. Dear Sirs, Helical Road Springs. /1305 With reference to our letter Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}6/MH.{M. Huckerby} of 15th June, we are glad to inform you that we have run a pair of springs FB.3826 for 100 hours on our test machine without failure, and this we consider very satisfactory. On receipt of these springs we shot blasted them (to clean them) and cadmium plated without acid treatment, and this, together with the extra care you have given these springs to ensure a minimum of decarbonization, appears to have had good results. We have therefore decided, with our Chief Engineers approval, not to experiment with cyanide treatment unless the trouble recurs, and accordingly are returning to you a pair of springs FB.3947 (which we were holding for cyanide treatment) for final heat treatment and finishing to dimensions. These latter springs are slightly more highly stressed than the FB.3826 which have been satisfactory, but the difference is not great. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
