To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c.c. SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} RG.{Mr Rowledge} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL! DALL/N.14.4.30. X7310 X5310. V523. RE: GEARBOXES. --------------- Enclosed herewith is a memo which Mr Hardy has prepared on the work on the Gearbox problem. We also enclose blueprints of three schemes, numbered(1),(2.) and(3.) These drawings are diagrams and not designs, as we thought it not desirable at this stage to make definite designs, but in order to get some idea of proportions, they are roughly to scale. (1) and (2) are approximately full size, (3) is approximately half size. (1) shews the arrangement proposed in R2/M.10.2.30. Mr Hardy has dealt with some points on this gear in his letter. In addition it may be considered that a synchro mesh device might be used to re-engage the jaw clutch. (2) shews an earlier proposal of Mr Royce's which is a slight modification of (1) with a view to eliminating the movements of the dog clutch in making forward changes so that the dog clutch is only used in starting and reversing. Hitherto it has been considered that this requires a separate lever to operate the dog clutch, and this may be the best way of doing it, but it is now suggested that it is not absolutely necessary. Assuming a relay control of the brake, pawls, and dog clutch it would be possible to have a single lever on the steering column arranged thus:- [DIAGRAM of a circle with radiating lines labelled from top to bottom: 4, COAST, 3, 2, 1, STOP, REVERSE] Continued. | ||
