The suggestion has also been made that with a quadrant control for the forward speeds, reverse and neutral can be obtained by a separate lever. Movement of this lever is needed before the dogs are disengaged for a quiet neutral.

iv.
There may not be insuperable objections to the main clutch being held free when the change lever is in neutral. In this case the engagement of the dogs between 3rd. and top, and top and 3rd. could be dealt with by Salerni rings, or with power available the operation of a direct drive clutch additional to the main clutch may be possible and worth while.

When the main clutch is held free high speeds of the gear parts are avoided during coasting.
