X3465 To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to W. c. to Rn.{Mr Robinson} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 8/LG28.10.20. X.3465. RE 40/50 CHASSIS STEERING. X.3920. We have broken the cross steering shaft in the steering box on the experimental car on which we have been carrying out a number of tests on steering. The car has been used a lot for investigating steering wobbles. We think there is no doubt that it is the low speed steering wobbles which have broken this piece. We have since heard of a car in service in france which has broken this cross steering shaft. We are sending to Mr. Royce the shaft which has broken on the experimental car. We understand from Mr. Day that a scheme has already been got out to strengthen up this part. we consider it advisable that experiments should be put in hand to prove these new pieces because any modifications which improve the reliability and safety of the steering is very desirable.
