To BJ. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} WATER BOILING ON 40/50 AND 20 HP. CARS. The size of the fan on the present 40/50 HP. is as large as it is possible to get on the car. The speed is as high as we consider possible to obtain reliable results. All cars are fitted with shutters to the bonnet - bonnet louvres have been condemned because they allow engine noises to be heard more easily. There would not be any very definite advantage with louvres over shutters. In the case of Mr. Sydney's complaint. He reported that the car boiled even when he ran with the bonnet open. Having the side of the bonnet open would allow a freer passage for the air than we could ever obtain with any shutters or louvres. Ventilated under-guards have been standard on all cars for a very considerable time. We are contemplating shortly to modify the gearbox undersheet with the object of reducing heat under the floor-boards. We have not been able to measure that this reduces the temperature of the cooling water. Whirl chamber to overcome water being thrown out. We reported fully to R.{Sir Henry Royce} on this matter and our figures showed that the loss of water on a hill mostly disappeared in steam and that any separator devise would not materially help.
