20 HP. REAR SHOCK DAMPERS.

CONNECTING TUBE LUBRICATION TESTS.

ARRANGEMENT DRAWING F.55965.

A damper was fitted to the jiggling rig, and a standard production connecting tube was used to connect the damper to the rig.
A 20 HP. Bijur pump fitted to the rig was found to deliver 40 drops in ten minutes (4 drops/min) through the standard No.1 drip plug.
When these tests were taken the Expl. detail drawing of the inner tube ball pads shewed a groove in the seating of each pad, but the production had not been instructed in the matter, consequently the inner tubes supplied by production were without grooves. These we will refer to as standard.

TEST 1 STANDARD.

Standard tube - Run for 30 mins with oil supplied as nearly constant as possible. Ball pad "B" was well lubricated, but "A" was dry. After a further ten minutes "A" was just wet, and the overflow had just reached "D" but "C" was dry.

TEST 2. PADS "B" & "C" GROOVED AS SHEWN IN DRG. F53218 & F54779.

The inner tube of the standard tube had a flat on the side of ball pad "B" and a narrow groove in the side of "C". For this test the groove was replaced by a flat similar to "B". After ten minutes only "A" and "B" were wet, but a further ten minutes sufficed to carry the oil to "C" and "D", "C" being just moist.

TEST 3. PADS "B" & "C" GROOVED AS ABOVE. FLAT ON SIDE OF "B" GROOVE ON "C".

After ten minutes it was found that only the pads "A" and "B" were lubricated "A" shewing a slight improvement over previous tests. A further ten minutes shewed no change "C" and "D" being quite dry.

TEST 4. PADS "B" & "C" GROOVED. THREE FLATS ON SIDE OF EACH.

During the previous tests all the surplus oil had escaped down the outside of the outer tube, so for this test three flats were filed on the sides of each of the ball pads "B" and "C". After ten minutes the oil had only reached pads "A" and "B", but after a further ten minutes all the pads were
