ORIGINAL. To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} REAR AXLE RATIOS. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}7/MJ.20.5.31. X.7350. X.5350. Referring to your suggestion of using higher axle ratios on our cars. The present axle ratio on the Phantom ll is 11/41. We have an alternative ratio of 12/41, we are proceeding to build an axle up with these gears. In your memo R1/MC.5.31. you mentioned Phantom ll as having a pinion with thirteen teeth and fourteen teeth. We have no gears of this type and have no designs. If it is thought that we could use these ratios then we ought to order them immediately because in the past it has taken us over six months to get them. In our opinion these gears would only be at all possible when we have a silent easy change third. The present 25 HP. axle ratio is 11/50, we have alternative gears of 12/50. Beyond this we have nothing in hand. In your memo mentioned above, you asked for an axle having thirteen teeth. This should be instructed although owing to the fact that we still are using the straight spiral bevel we can obtain this quicker than the hypoid. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
