TELEPHONE: PERIVALE 1096. JSHM/BW 12th July, 1939. G.M. Grylls, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Grylls, Many thanks for your letter of July 10th. I should have written to you before to thank you for the very pleasant day I spent with you and for the excellent lunch which you gave me while I was there. With regard to the point you raise of arranging a solid drive at low speeds, we should not feel inclined to countenance such a retrograde step as this, but I think it would be comparatively easy to arrange to put the reaction member out of operation at the driver's option, and this would have the effect of turning the transmitter from a torque converter and coupling into a coupling only, which would give practically a solid drive even at the low engine revolutions. I think, in considering any such alteration, you must bear in mind that the fussiness of which you complain on the Humber was due partly to the fact that you were driving in order to produce it; partly to the fact that the Humber engine is not a Rolls-Royce or a Bentley engine and is not as quiet; partly owing to the fact that the floorboards which I had in that particular car are only makeshift floorboards and are not particularly sound proof. If I can give you any further information I hope you will let me know. With many thanks again for a very pleasant day. I remain, Yours sincerely, J S H Moore | ||
