therefore there is a small amount of shake present. We are wondering whether this small amount of shake has given you the impression that the tracks have worn in accordance with your report, as we have not been able to discover any wear on the same.

As regards the fit of the bearings both in the housing and on the tube, these Gurney type bearings are assembled in such a way that they are able to align themselves up properly, that is to say that there is not an interference fit between the housing and the cup of the bearing, neither is there an interference fit between the cone and the shaft. It was observed, however, that the fit of the cone on the shaft at the bottom end was slacker than the same fit at the top end by .0005", which was due to the shaft being that amount smaller after being driven through the Cam.

The condition of the Steering Gear in other respects would appear to be very satisfactory, and the Cam showed no sign whatever of wear, the dimensions of the track being the same as when it left these Works as new.

As regards the flange which was pegged and braized on, this has come loose, and this matter we spoke to your Mr. Robotham about over the telephone the other day. We have not attempted to re-braize this flange seeing the urgency with which you required the gear back, and the grave risk of distorting the casting during this braizing operation. We understood from Mr. Robotham, however, that you were going to fix this flange up yourselves for the purpose of getting the steering on the road.

Again we would like to express our best thanks for the opportunity you have given us to examine this gear, which has been of the greatest value to us.
