Technical Minutes of Conference on
Petrol Marine Unit.

present Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} AA.{D. Abbot-Anderson} & Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner}

(1) The project is to take the 8 cylinder engine and convert it for Marine purposes with the minimum amount of alteration.

(2) To avoid the large size of bell housing which may be a handicap when we endeavour to install the unit in a boat and also since we do not wish to place the flywheel at the front end of the engine it was suggested that we make the diameter of the flywheel just large enough to carry a 9 inch B. & B. clutch. The inertia necessary might be say half of our lightest car flywheel.

(3) It was suggested that the Bilge pump be driven from the aft end of the dynamo but this is not attractive as the speed is too fast and the suction lift is considerable, a better scheme, which will be designed is to have a separate belt driving the main water pump and bilge pump, mounted low in the engine.

(4) An engine of the Kermath type which uses fresh water as the coolant needs an additional water pump for the inter cooler.

(5) It was decided to fit the thermostat but we have to find one that will function in salt water,

(6) We shall offer the engine with two exhaust manifolds because of the increased horse power available, the downtakesmay be brought downwards at the front, and rear of the engine, coupled to two silencers. if the boat builders choose to siamese the downtakes we consider this will be their affair.

The manifolds will be water jacketed, the water being fed direct from the pump through the manifold
