HORIZONTAL DIESELS ON SHIPBOARD

This article is complementary to one published in December and is mainly a description of the latest, and in many ways the most interesting, example of the application of horizontal oil engines to ships

IN our last article on this subject (pp. 356-8 of the December issue) we reviewed the brief but interesting history of the horizontal oil engine on shipboard up to comparatively recent times. At the end of that article we indicated that we had available for publication particulars of a novel horizontal-engined motorship with Voith-Schneider propellers. This is the Abercraig, the latest vessel to be propelled by horizontal heavy-oil engines; she is illustrated below and we also give her general arrangement.

Built by Fleming & Ferguson, Ltd., Paisley, to the order of the Dundee Harbour Trust for vehicular and passenger ferry service on the River Tay, the vessel, which is sub-divided into seven watertight compartments, is constructed of steel in accordance with

and 46 motor cars on a draught of 5 ft. 1 in. The engine room height is under 7 ft. and the use of horizontal main engines was justified in view of the excellent general arrangement and high carrying capacity which they undoubtedly further.

The Brush-engined Voith-Schneider - propelled ferry " Abercraig " is also provided with horizontal oil engines for driving her two auxiliary generators. She operates between Dundee and Newport and can carry 1,200 passengers
