Dear Burton,

Many thanks for your letter.

I was particularly interested in your first impressions of the Phantom ll, and accept the criticisms you made as being perfectly reasonable. Since I returned from U.S.A. we have compared your valve opening curves with ours and find that owing to the different arrangement of the tappet relative to the camshaft, you do get a more rapid inlet opening on your Phantom I which accounts for your increase in power at low speeds. We have tried out several modifications to the Phantom ll and we have been able to increase the low speed power. I am not in a position, however, to say when you are likely to receive this alteration on cars.

I am very anxious to know what has happened to the 'H' aero engines we supplied to the U.S. Navy. The fellow at Brewsters who looks after the aeroplane float section said that he would be able to let us know what was happening to these engines because he was in close touch with the U.S. Navy authorities at Washington. We should be very grateful if you would let us know what they have done with them or what they intend to do with them.

We are making one or two improvements to the car. We have actually designed a gearbox with a synchro-mesh for third and top speed, which will be made under G.N. licence if we go on with it. We have also made an Epicyclic box which we think will come out rather complicated and expensive.

The aero engine job is still keeping us busy, especially the racing engines.

With very kind regards to all,
Yours sincerely,
