To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Wors. 8772. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}4/MJ.4.6.31. Attached herewith is a copy of a note I have received from Burton at Springfield which may be of interest to you because it is the first report I have seen of their impression of the left-hand Phantom ll's. Their views, of course, are very interesting to us. The interesting points we see are - (1) They appear to be entirely satisfied with springing and shock absorbers. (2) They have picked out the boom at 65 to 60 M.P.H. and attribute it to exhaust which is easily understood, but we cannot expect it to stay there. (3) Their criticism of the low speed power is what we expected. (4) It is interesting to see their views on axle ratio demanding a lower geared axle, when, at the same time we are considering a higher axle ratio. We have got to accept that their demand for better acceleration is a customers demand and will have to be met. (5) We are interested in Mr. J.P. Morgan's complaint on his English Phantom ll where he mentions the water was very hot and the car was running at 93°C. We can expect radiator complaints from them. On the question of radiator tubes. I asked Springfield if they would enquire unofficially from the Winchester people what it would mean to produce radiator tubes of the American type. The question of cost we leave for other people.
