Re Hair Cracks in Crankshafts - American Engines.

CJ's Secretary spoke to me on the telephone this morning with reference to my memo BY12/F17618, of which you have all received a copy.

Mr Royce has wired to CJ, and, as repeated to me over the telephone, the substance of R's telegram was:-

1) If we were not able to accept or pass hair cracks in engines we could not accept hair cracks in crankshafts from America.

2) R.{Sir Henry Royce} stated that he had not himself personally condemned cranks for hair cracks generally speaking, but depends upon where the hair crack occurred, its magnitude, and possibly the number of cracks.

3) He considers that the question of the passing of hair cracks, or not, could be better dealt with by the experienced people at Derby.
