AMERICAN ENGINES - RE HAIR CRACKS.

Referring to your secretary's conversation on the telephone this morning, I have called the Conference in question, which included Mr Wormald, Mr Hives, Mr Platford, Lieut. Hill & Lieut. Ebent of the A.I.D. and myself.

The general conclusions arrived at were:-

(1) The A.I.D. were not prepared to pass any cranks which shewed hair cracks at all.

(2) Rolls-Royce Officials, as a whole, were agreed that discrimination should be made, and that, providing the hair crack was not of marked length and was clear of the web, that the cranks should not be scrapped.

In view, however, of the fact that the passing of cranks is in the hands of the A.I.D. we are of the opinion that we should notify America that the A.I.D. will refuse anything with hair cracks in, and therefore if the matter is to be discussed further the discussion should be between Commander Briggs and the Air Department Officials, as that is where the deadlock actually arises. Since Mr Royce agrees with the position adopted at our works, namely, that hair cracks by our experimental running have not proved themselves to be a cause of failure, and therefore if the cracks are clear of changes of section and isolated cases of not great magnitude, we consider that they would not cause failure.
