Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GR{George Ratcliffe} 1297. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}10/G.9.-- File WHATMAN BENTLEY 111 - CARBURETTER AIR SILENCER WITH REAR OUTLET. Please receive herewith :- E.CD.1071 Air Intake Pipe, End Offtake Air Silencer, Bentley 111. This design has been made at the request of the Experimental Department, and consists of a reversion to the original air silencer E.CD.198 with a new air intake pipe designed to suit the 1.500" diameter throttle carburetters now being used on the Bentley 111, also to clear the new type of fixed side plate bonnet with its catches. It should be kept in mind that this design can only be used along with the altered dashboard, such as that used on chassis 10.B.V. and not with the type of dashboard fitted to 8.B.V. chassis. We have omitted the spherical joint connection on the air intake pipe to bring into line with latest practice, and to reduce cost. The following modifications are also shown on this drawing, and these apply to all Bentley 111 engines irrespective of which air silencer is used :- (1). The joint washers for petrol inlet connection to carburetter float chambers are changed from aluminium to copper and asbestos, as it has been found difficult to make a joint with the aluminium washers, and pipe washers are not allowed. (2). The shape of the petrol feed pipe is altered slightly where it passes the jet cap nut of the forward carburett-ers, in order to give clearance with the cap nut. Regarding item (1) it will be noted that the C. & A.{Mr Adams} washer is not on the standard list, although it is a maker's standard washer; this is unavoidable, as conditions of size are dictated by the standard connection supplied with the carburetter by the S.U. Co. Will you please detail and instruct the air intake pipe and air silencer experimentally for use as required. | ||
