Design changes and repairability for the Goshawk front cross member.

GOSHAWK - FRONT CROSS MEMBER X4260 We have sent a design in which the flange, still made from a pressing, is increased in thickness, and the radius of the corner also considerably increased. We have also sent you on the same drawing (4th. design) a drop forging for the flange, in which case the strength should break at the tube or the bolts rather than the flange. The bolts are important and useful ones as they also hold up in our standard design the supporting iron for the front wings. On these drawings is also shewn a liner which can be fitted ( a thin one) to each side so that the cross member can be got in after the chassis is built. We should not suggest that these liners with the shorter dimensions of tube should be used except for repair work, then only supposing that the frame cannot be sprung apart sufficiently to get in a new cross member. This cross member ought not to need changing except it is defective in construction which should be a very rare. Regarding the rear cross tube this is more likely to be damaged in traffic than the front cross member, and to the best of my memory we arranged that this should be bolted in so that it could be removed, or the rivets could be cut off, and got out by springing the frame.
